Welcome to the Spring Session at a Room for Art!

As in the Winter Session Art Play gatherings invite students to define their own projects, choose materials, and experiment. The studio is set up as a work space for the group to share.

Art Classes offer a specific project with a set of materials. Experimentation is encouraged within the limits of the project.

Art Play

Choose from materials available: build, paint, play. All gatherings 3-5pm, for K-Gr5

Art that Moves: splatter, marble, tops and pendulums? Let’s experiment with paint! All classes 3:30-5pm, for K-Gr5

Send me an email with your choice of class. Fees and contact information (if you have not been with me this school year) due by first class/gathering. I will send you the file.

Winter Art 2017

HI All-
The fall session is winding down! It has been a pleasure working/playing with your children. Thanks to Elyse Spink (Thursday Art Play) and Eileen Murphy-McNamara (Tues. and Thurs. Art Class) Eileen’s annual middle school Architecture Workshop will happen in the Spring this year.

We have a few more classes to enjoy but here is the winter schedule for you to ponder. The session starts the week of Jan 9 and ends the week of March 20. It would be great to have your decisions before the holidays.

I am keeping the Art Play times on Tuesday and Thursday. If you are currently in these groups let me know if you would like to continue ASAP. I will invite others to enroll if the numbers allow. Art classes will be slightly different. They will be on Tuesday and Thursday but will be divided into 4 workshops. Families will be able to opt for 5, 3 or 2 classes. See below- it will make more sense!

To Register: if your child is a returning student from the fall session just send me an email letting me know which gathering/class you would like. If you were not enrolled this fall send me an email with your child’s name and birthdate and mail me the contact information below. 115 Robbins Rd, Arlington, Ma 02476
Fees are due the first day of classes or before.

Art Play
For K-Gr 5, free choice from a number of art activities/media- paint, draw, build, play 

Tuesdays 3-5pm 1/10, 1/24, 2/7, 2/28, 3/14
Thursdays 3-5pm 1/12, 1/26, 2/9, 3/2, 3/16

fee: $100 for 5 gatherings

Art Classes
For K- Gr 5, students will be led through different projects/ processes. The family grouping may be divided by age between 2 teachers depending upon the composition of the group.

New this winter the art class sessions will be divided into 4 workshops with a specific focus- process or medium. Eileen will work with me again this session and she will lead workshop 3.
You can sign up for the whole session as usual or you may sign up for part:

Workshop 1: Print/Watercolor: Learn simple block printing and watercolor techniques. Experiment with printing on your paintings and painting on your prints!Tuesdays 3:30-5pm 1/17, 1/31, 2/14

Workshop 2: 3D Paper: Experiment with the wonderful, versatile and familiar medium of paper. How many different ways can we make sculptural pieces with this flat medium?
Tuesdays 3:30 5pm 3/7, 3/21

Workshop 3: Paste Paper/Collage: Enjoy the rich process of layering an acrylic paint and paste mixture onto paper. Make an assortment of your own paper, then create collages using the dry product. Produce a set of handmade cards.
Thursdays 3:30-5pm 1/19, 2/2, 2/16


Workshop 4: Simple books: Learn simple bookbinding techniques- sewn pamphlet, accordion, stick and elastic. Produce your own set of blank books for gifts or for your own work

Fall Art

Hi Everybody- It is definitely still Summer but it is that time when we start to look at our calendars for the Fall. Don’t leave the beach but let me know what you are interested in for Fall art. Enjoy the next few weeks! See you in October.

I am changing the format a little this fall. I am planning alternate weeks of art play and art classes. All art classes and art play sessions are every other week and start in October, end in December. Feel free to email me with questions!

Art Play!
Come to the studio and paint, draw, construct, mess around with media, build with blocks or play with versatile materials. Make what the materials invite you to make! The space will be a structured environment designed for children to make their own choices. We all need to time to play but busy school age children really need it! (think art camp at free choice)
Unlike art classes we won’t all do the same project. Unlike Open Studios it will be a registered session. ( I am putting my thoughts together about art, materials and play and will post it here soon)

3:00-5pm every other week

K-Gr5 Tuesdays: 10/4, 10/18, 11/1, 11/15, 12/6
K-Gr5 Thursdays: 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, 11/17, 12/8
Fee $100 for 5, 2 hr sessions

Art Classes Art classes, like always, will have a specific project each week. Eileen Murphy- McNamara will be working with me again. This Fall the inspiration will be Trees! We will do a variety of 2D and 3D projects.

Check out Eileen’s adult community ed course!

Explore what makes watercolor so amazing—its freshness, transparency, portability and versatility. In this course, we will paint from still lifes inspired by the season using techniques including wet on wet, glazing and dry brush. With an eye towards rich color, gradient washes and ways of capturing both light and depth, we will create studies and final paintings. All skill levels welcomed. Materials list will be sent before first class. Come and experiment!

Summer Art Camp 2016

Here is the scoop on Summer Camp at A Room for Art. I am only doing TWO weeks this summer so sign up early. Send me an email and I will send you the documents to fill out. You will be registered when I receive your paperwork and deposit. I will confirm by email when I get those papers.

Artcamp 2016

What:

Summer Art Camp is a morning program for 5-11yr olds. Art projects are linked to games, stories, playful physical challenges and experimentation with elements like water, sand, clay, bubbles, earth and air. We do individual and collaborative work with a variety of 2D and 3D materials. The work is inspired by nature, fine artists, the materials themselves, and each other. It’s summer and the aim is to get wet, dirty and immersed in the elements!

When: 9am -12noon

Week 1 July 18- July 22

Week 2  July 25- July 29

Where:

115 Robbins Rd, Arlington

Camp will be held in the studio down the driveway to the right of the house. Door is on the left. We will also work and play in the yard and at Robbins Farm Park

Approximate Schedule:

9:00 Gathering activity outside and inside

9:15 Meeting and Art Project, free play

10:30 Bathroom and snack

11:00

Walk to the Park, Games (this timing is subject to weather, how much everybody needs an open space to run and the whim of all the artists involved)

OR

Free play at studio

12:00 Pickup at 115 Robbins Rd

Early Pickup: Let me know if you need to pick up your child early. You can come to the park if we are there.

What to bring

Bring:

 -water bottle

- if raining, a rain coat

Wear:

- hat

-shoes to run in(no flip flops please)

-clothes that can get dirt, paint, glue and more on them(I have smocks)

-sunscreen (please apply at home)

It is also helpful if you eat breakfast and do a bathroom visit before you come to camp! (full stomach, empty bladder)

Snack:

-Mid morning snack of some combination of crackers, cheese, bagels, muffins, yogurt, fruit or vegetables.

-Water for the drink.

 Let me know if there are food issues

Assistants:

I will have an assistant with me from 10-12 each day. They will help

me with materials, bathroom runs, cleanup and the trip to the park.

The Art

Visit my blog for pictures of past projects and summer camp archives. It will give you an idea of the materials I use regularly and the kinds of activities we do at camp. During Summer Camp we will do more with the outdoors and nature for inspiration. Each week will have a loose theme to tie the activities together. Some of the projects will produce products that we can play with outside. Some projects will be collaborative and others will simply be art to look at. There will be free time to experiment with materials.

The media will be a mixture of 2D and 3D.

I’ll let you know the themes later! (Not only do I need time to get it altogether, I also think that a theme does not tell a child what camp’s going to be like)

Registration! Please Read-

 I am not going to take information by email rather by mail (paper). I will send you a registration package that you can drop off or mail. Just send me an email to request one. When I receive a complete package your child will be registered.

(This way I won’t chase anyone for contact information or $ and I can think about ART!)

Fees:

$200 per week per child, $50 due at time of registration, balance due on or before 1^st day of class

Sibling discount: 10% off total

Spring Classes 2016

Spring Session: Paint!!

Tempera, Watercolor, Acrylic! Let's mix wet with dry, dry with wet and work outside as much as possible. The last class of this session is dedicated to paint that moves. Get Ready!

Winter Art Classes 2016

Happy Almost Winter!
I am grateful for my studio and the time I have with your children to play and create. Every class teaches me something-sometimes about persistence, humor, asking for help, invention and always about the power of creating something with one’s own hands.
This winter I need some time to rest, do my own work and reflect on what art education is. I might even update my blog more that once a season!

I am cutting my class offerings in half but adding some Open Studios for those students who would like a few sessions of messing around. I know this won’t impact the many families whose artists are also athletes, musicians, actors and scholars. I apologize to the few who have counted on this time in the studio regularly. Hopefully the winter logistics will work out for most of you.

Eileen Murphy McNamara, architect and artist, will be back with her four class Architecture Workshop for middle schoolers (Gr 6-8). I will assist her in these hands- on classes. Students will have the opportunity to build with a variety of materials and learn basic architectural principles. Save the dates! MAX 6 students More information to follow about this workshop

Fall Classes 2015

Classes will start on October and end in December for the Fall Session. I have added a different class on Wednesday for all the builders I have met through the years. The focus will be on PLAY: blocks, ramps and balls, marble runs, mobile materials, found materials and clay. It will be multi age and usually producing no finished product.
