A Room for Art

A Room for Art is a place to paint, draw, build, print, bind, glue and sculpt. Classes for children and adults are held in a sunny home studio in Arlington, MA. More than a room, it is time and space to work with your hands, enjoy materials and make your ideas concrete.

Location

A Room for Art is located in Arlington Heights at 115 Robbins Road. The Studio is down the driveway on the right side of the house.

Winter Classes 2014

Welcome to the Winter Session. This fall we were printers-we rubbed, rolled, squished, carved, cut and drew. Printing is all about making or finding something to print from- a leaf, a found object, a styrofoam sheet, a piece of rubberlike material, a collograph. We find or make the ‘block’ or ‘plate’, ink it up and transfer the image to paper. To be interesting it has to have a texture, some parts have to be higher than others. We played with the idea of structures that have two planes- one that the ink goes on and one that the ink misses. A plate can be made by digging or carving the low plane (styro prints, speedy cut) or building up the high plane (collographs)

This winter we’ll be builders- collage, assemblage and sculpture. We’ll glue, tape, attach, wrap and wire.

Fall Classes 2013

slides and shadow puppets artcamp 2013
Concrete learners need things to think with, use materials to express ideas instead of words.
Welcome to the Fall Session
Students will have opportunities to experiment with a variety of materials, be inspired from nature, fine art and each other, learn drawing and painting skills, play, invent with everyday materials, make 2D and 3D pieces, develop a visual vocabulary, begin to understand the Elements of Art: line, shape, colour, value, texture, space, composition, form.
The classes will include some inspiration like a story, a game, a visual search or a challenge that introduces an art project. The projects have different kinds of products, sometimes important to the student, sometimes not. Occasionally there is no permanent product.

This Fall I’ll be offering classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, starting the first week of October. Each group will meet every other week for an hour and a half,  for a 5 class session. Each of the 2 younger age groups, K-Gr 2 and Gr 3-5, will have 3 options. One of the options is a family group class, K-Gr5 on Thursdays. Wednesday classes are spread out because I work once a month at Coyote Club at Habitat.
The grade 6-8 class will be lead by Eileen Murphy- McNamara and myself and will be a combination of art/design and architecture.(more news on this to follow)

Spring and Summer Update

a tulip the squirrels didn't get

Spring:
The spring session has begun at the studio! Welcome all painters! Come visit us during Open Studios if you are busy playing baseball, swimming or playing in the woods and not taking class. We have 4 classes running this spring. There is room in the Gr 3-5 and Gr 6-8 classes, both on Thursdays. We will be out doors some of the time as weather permits and will be using mostly 2D wet media- ink, watercolor, tempera and acrylic
Last class extreme painting: We have a Spring tradition of letting paint go off the paper or canvas, and into the air or our feet, hands, legs... this is an optional direction (some people are happy with the colour they are) We temper our extravaganza if the weather is cold and simply stretch the boundaries by doing splatter painting outside and marble painting inside. We will be talking more about it as the time draws near.

Summer Art Camp:
All weeks are full as of now except the first, June 24-28. Due to snow days this is a school week so I invite preschoolers going to Kindergarten next year or homeschoolers from 5-11 yrs. (scroll down for more information) I do have a wait list and occasionally spots open up so let me know if you are interested.

The Art
Visit my blog for pictures of past projects and summer camp archives. It will give you an idea of the materials I use regularly  and the kinds of activities we do at camp. During Summer Camp we will do more with the outdoors and nature for inspiration. Each week will have a loose theme to tie the activities together. Some of the projects will produce products that we can play with outside. Some projects will be collaborative and others will simply be art to look at. There will be free time to experiment with materials.
The media will be a mixture of 2D and 3D.

I’ll let you know the themes later! (Not only do I need time to get it altogether, I also think that a theme does not tell a child what camp’s going to be like)

To Register: Send me an email with your name,  your child's name, birthdate, week of camp preference 1 and 2 and I will send you the contact form to send in with your deposit.
